Plot: This movie is about Sarah as she and her dad go to their lakeside retreat to pack things up inside because it is being sold. While there, her uncle also helps get the place up to scratch so they can sell it. The uncle has to leave to get an electrician to check the wiring, but after he goes she starts hearing noises and seeing what she thinks are people inside the house. Soon she and her dad are attacked by someone or something and they end up in a fight for their lives. But there's something more going on here than she thinks. Don't listen to negative reviews, this was a really good movie. This is one of those movies that only some will like, and only those who like this type of movie. Let me start off by saying THIS IS NOT a slasher film, it more plays on your emotions and fear. A few times during the movie I thought to myself that this type of home invasion can happen to almost anyone, it sort of reminded me on The Strangers but these two movies are vastly different in many ways. As the original one, this film is amazing. I really don;t understand about the rating of the both films, original and remake. They are excellent. Great work of camera, cinematography, directing and performance. Elisabeth Olsen is superb! God, She is pretty scaring as an actress, what a powerful acting! I really don;t care about the plot, or if the ending is not satisfying. Elisabeth Olsen and the camera work worth all the time you spend watching this great picture. Very climatic and thrilling. Perfect. Also, i took note of how similar is this film from "Martha Marcy May Marlene", and them I understood why the producers casted Elizabeth Olsen.
You can't call a movie average just because it doesn't have any philosophical undertone. One might have guessed the twist because he or she is 'smart' but that doesn't make this a cliche film. The horror lies in the protagonist's brain, her past experiences. People need to empathize with the character rather than saying, " Oh, I didn't see anything new."

The is only my second review on IMDb but I feel it's important to offset the unduly negative reviews here. I read the reviews beforehand and was put off watching but was actually amazed at how good the film actually is. The film is superior in every way to Open Water, which is also a very good film. I feel a bit for the directors, having made such an obviously great horror film, only to not have it recognised as such. The main actor is extremely good at her job. I have seen virtually every 'woman in peril' movie but the fear experienced by her character is utterly palpable and <more>
convincing. The fear of having killer strangers in your house is done better in this film than ANY OTHER film I have watched. Far from the 'real time' aspect not working, it actually works brilliantly and is done extremely well. PS. and no, I'm nothing to do with cast or makers of this film!! This film was art. This film is for thinkers. This film was such a magnificent statement about the psychological damage child abuse can do to a person. I loved that this drama was beautifully disguised as a horror film. In the beginning i love that i could not tell when the old best friend showed up whether or not she was really there. I was torn between thinking this was a supernatural film or a home invasion type film.I'll explain it for those who didn't understand. soldier type "bad guy" she sees is like the memory chasing her. Later she imagines herself as this villain when she attacks her father and uncle. The childhood friend of hers is typical for abused children. They often develop schizophrenia or split personalities as a way to cope.When she's running through the house later and she sees the child in the bloody water with bottles it says to me her father was often drunk when he molested her and he took her virginity. If you notice earlier in the film when the father was taking pictures of the mold in the house she gets a look on her face. Her subconscious is starting to recall the memories of when he took photos of her. The same photos the father and uncle keep hiding from her.This film was absolutely brilliant. Those who simply expected a horror film were disappointed I'm sure. Much like with M. Knight's The Village there was depth and range and something different. I appreciated this film in all it's glory. Shot for horror fans but the only thing she's running from in this horror film is her own memories and sometimes that can be scarier than any villain. A masterpiece even in all its flaws. Unique and something truly original.

This is a very intelligently crafted psychological thriller. Whether or not it is "scary" really doesn't matter. The film focuses mainly on being simple, subtle and puzzling. It never at any time becomes unfocused because from start to finish it is completely clear in its storytelling. It doesn't ever reveal a traditional upfront plot twist. It isn't supposed to. The title itself is not only dead on but it also mirrors the atmosphere of the entire film. When a title is so adequately chosen for a screenplay this should deliver a message right from the start. Yes the film is silent and that's exactly what you'll hear throughout. You'll hear silence and feel silence. When something traumatic occurs in someone's life they'll bury it very deep, way down into their soul.If you have a chance much later on in life to face the pasts demons you might have to do it all alone, in the cold darkness, no matter how frightening it may be or how sad it will make you feel. Even if it calls for bolt locking doors and windows and forcing yourself to stay in the most horrifying place you've ever known in your life, which in this girl's case was her childhood home.Silent House is a psychological horror/drama. It plays out on a level that is extremely close to reality cleverly editing together what seems to be approximately 10 minute sequences that are very hard to catch but the Director doesn't try to hide it. The edits are just as subtle as the film, like at the opening or closing of a door. The main key point is chilling claustrophobia for both the character and the audience. Olsen's performance again is precise, right on target.What was crafted here was a small masterpiece of one girl's attempt at destroying her scars of heartbreak once and for all.It's icy, realistic, haunting and completely original.

The subsequent 75 minutes are spent with Sarah hiding from and fighting off an unknown assailant with malicious intent.I have to start off by saying that, as a seasoned horror fan, I'm appalled by the ridiculous number of one-star reviews for this film on here. I've seen A LOT of horror movies— I know the genre extremely well, I'll leave it at that. And while "Silent House" may not be the greatest film of all time, I can't help but feel that the majority of negative responses to it are from teenagers and others who went in expecting one thing from this film and got something much different. While this is somewhat understandable due to advertising the trailers for this film almost make it look like a rip-off of the 2008 home-invasion thriller "The Strangers" , I think the bandwagon backlash to this film has been unnecessarily harsh. The fact of the matter is this is an extremely difficult film to properly market, and it appears that the distributors decided to go about it by forcing it into the parameters of typical horror film advertising; and although the trailers and promotional material for the movie were alluring to genre fans, they don't do a good job of representing the film for what it actually is.Let's face it; conceptually speaking, this film is "been there, done that" in just about every way. The twists and turns of this story have been treaded on before in lots of other films. We know the formula. So, in order for this film to work, the execution is what really matters— the finer details. Fortunately, as far as I'm concerned, the filmmakers hit all the right notes in this department and that is this film's saving grace. First off, we have the "real time" gimmick. The movie was purportedly filmed in one continuous take, but I spied a couple moments that were a bit too conveniently dark or conveniently erratic, where a cut in the film would be completely unnoticeable to an audience. Regardless, the film was very obviously shot with hand-held cameras and the takes are in fact extremely long we're talking some at least 10-15 minutes, maybe more .The camera follows Elizabeth Olsen throughout the entire film, never leaving her once, and the feat this must have been for her and the other actors is impressive to say the least Olsen blew me away me in last year's "Martha Marcy May Marlene", and she doesn't fail to impress here . Not only does this unique manner of presentation give the actors a platform to prove themselves, but it also involves the audience in a way that most films don't— we see the entire thing unfold right there alongside the character, and that makes the film's scare tactics all the more effective. This mode of storytelling is also impressive on a mere technical level due to the scrupulous orchestration and timing that it demands of both the cast and the crew. Now, about those other "finer details"— for one, the film's "spooky house" setting is exacerbated by the boarded up windows and interior darkness, leaving potential threats looming in every nook and cranny. This leaves the protagonist and thus, we, the audience disoriented in a darkened maze of doors, hallways, staircases, and tons of antique furniture. Can a setting for a horror film get any better than that?Visually speaking, I was also impressed with this film for its stylistic pursuits. It may be a horror movie, but there are some definite art house moments here that you don't find in big-budget horror films. Hallucinatory sequences in the film— namely a bathroom scene which includes a young girl bathing in a tub full of bloody water and beer bottles, and a toilet hanging from the wall spewing blood— are reminiscent of "The Shining", and are as visually startling as they are relevant to the nasty core of the plot.Which brings me to another interesting dynamic at work here, which lies in the end reveal. As I said, the formula has been done to death, but the focal point of this film's twist ending is so abhorrent and disturbing that it can't help but stand out like a sore thumb. It's a risky subject matter that we're ultimately dealing with, and the filmmakers and actors handled it extremely well. If that weren't enough for the horror crowd as it is truly horrific in every sense of the word , the film's climax is complete with sledgehammer action, a psychotic rambling evocative of Mrs. Voorhees, and a good old fashioned taste of feminist vengeance— not necessarily in that order.Overall, "Silent House" is a winner in my book. The "continuous take" stratagem is involving, Olsen's performance is stellar, and the film's bleakness is reminiscent of 1970s grindhouse films, but is wrapped up with the mentality of a modern-day psychothriller. Throw in a little bit of art house in there, too, for taste. In my opinion, one of the best horror efforts in a long while, and one of the most hyper-criticized films so far this year. 8/10.
I've heard people say this is the worst horror movie ever? LOL Wow, you have clearly not seen any movies whatsoever. And those same people say Paranormal Activity was the best? LOOOOOL That movie was worse. Anyways, to the point this movie is good. It's not amazing, but it's good. It's a bit confusing but you have to be kinda dumb to not understand what's happening by the end. I don't think it should be a horror movie I guess it fits more into mystery/suspense/drama. editing would be HORRIBLE. It wasn't. It was very good. I barely noticed it was all in one shot, it was that well done. I think I jumped like once maybe twice? Not the scariest movie but nonetheless it was very entertaining. I would watch it again. Pretty good.

Or is it all in Sarah's imagination she is carefully set up to strike you as just a little off-beam ? Or is someone trying to drive her crazy? No spoilers here - the answer to this is one of the main reasons for watching the movie. Suffice it to say that much of the film is effectively suspenseful: not scary, but there is a lot of tension, well managed.Technically, the interesting thing is that the movie was supposedly filmed in a single real-time take. While there are places where edits could be positioned, it is nonetheless obvious that much of the movie was filmed without edits, and this is an impressive achievement. The amount of planning alone would have been phenomenal in order to consider lighting in the house used as the set: much of the film uses the actual light sources the characters carry, but there are times when apparent ambient light is used. You are never aware of the camera crew, and the hand held camera work is phenomenal: likewise sound.This element also needs to be factored into Elizabeth Olsen's performance which is, quite simply, exceptional, and a distinct cut above the normal snivelling heroine notwithstanding that there is some of that in her performance .One final point - most of the character behaviour here is exactly how I would expect characters to behave in the situation: how refreshing!
